The What and the Why

A message I perpetually reinforce with all my students, but especially my black belt students, is: focus on the journey, not the destination.

If we only focus on where we are going, we are placing value on the ‘what’, not the ‘why’. ‘What’ is the accomplishment , it is where we are going. ‘Why’ is the reason the accomplishment is important and it is the reason we started our journey in the first place. ‘Why’ reinforces the value of the ‘What’ and it fuels our motivation.

This important differentiation may be THE chink in your training armour. If you are feeling unmotivated to train, maybe it is time to remind yourself of the ‘Why’ you started training in the first place.

Focus on your journey and your destination will be perpetually in front of you. This is especially important when you are a black belt. It is impossible to remain motivated if you have decided that you have already arrived at your destination.
