Make Yourself Teachable

Are you teachable? Are you open to new ideas and approaches? Or are you only looking for reinforcement of your already arrived at conclusions?

Surrounding yourself with positive influences and seeking out mentors who can help you achieve your goals are important strategies to employ when we are striving for mastery. But all the assistance and positive influence in the world is not going to make a difference if you are unteachable.

Reminding yourself of why you train is the first step in maintaining a learning attitude. We are looking for more than knowledge, we are looking for skill, and skill is only acquired through hard work.

We have multiple grounding strategies that we employ at the kwoon to help get our minds into a teachable state. From the bowing in ceremony to the Sun Toi (altar), to how we address each other on the mats — there are many traditions and methods to tweak our attitudes and make us more teachable.

If you have the right attitude, a learning attitude, mastery becomes easier. Become a teachable student by opening your mind and working hard to make your theoretical knowledge physically applicable.
